Hox Genes: Did the Vertebrate Ancestor Have a Hox14?

چکیده

A new group of vertebrate Hox genes, Hox14, has been discovered in two fish, the horn shark and the coelacanth. This reveals that ancestrally all jawed vertebrates may have had fourteen Hox paralogue groups rather than the thirteen groups of mammals and teleost fish.

Revisiting the origin of the vertebrate Hox14 by including its relict sarcopterygian members.

Bilaterian Hox genes play pivotal roles in the specification of positional identities along the anteroposterior axis. Particularly in vertebrates, their regulation is tightly coordinated by tandem arrays of genes [paralogy groups (PGs)] in four gene clusters (HoxA-D). Traditionally, the uninterrupted Hox cluster (Hox1-14) of the invertebrate chordate amphioxus was regarded as an archetype of th...

The amphioxus Hox cluster: deuterostome posterior flexibility and Hox14.

The amphioxus (Branchiostoma floridae) Hox cluster is a model for the ancestral vertebrate cluster, prior to the hypothesized genome-wide duplications that may have facilitated the evolution of the vertebrate body plan. Here we describe the posterior (5') genes of the amphioxus cluster, and report the isolation of four new homeobox genes. Vertebrates possess 13 types of Hox gene (paralogy group...

Noncanonical role of Hox14 revealed by its expression patterns in lamprey and shark.

Hox genes are arranged in uninterrupted clusters in vertebrate genomes, and the nested patterns of their expression define spatial identities in multiple embryonic tissues. The ancestral Hox cluster of vertebrates has long been thought to consist of, maximally, 13 Hox genes. However, recently, Hox14 genes were discovered in three chordate lineages, the coelacanth, cartilaginous fishes, and amph...

Hox Genes and the Evolution of Vertebrate Axial Morphology Experiment (1995)

In 1995, researchers Ann Burke, Craig Nelson, Bruce Morgan, and Cliff Tabin in the US studied the genes [5] that regulate the construction of vertebra in developing chick [6] and mouse [7] embryos, they showed similar patterns of gene regulation [8] across both species, and they concluded that those patterns were inherited from an ancestor common to all vertebrate animals. The group analyzed th...

Differential evolution of voltage-gated sodium channels in tetrapods and teleost fishes.

The voltage-gated sodium channel (SCN) alpha subunits are large proteins with central roles in the generation of action potentials. They consist of approximately 2,000 amino acids encoded by 24-27 exons. Previous evolutionary studies have been unable to reconcile the proposed gene duplication schemes with the species distribution and molecular phylogeny of the genes. We have carefully annotated...
